The way I see it, the period from 2011 to 2021 represents a complete cycle in the vintage Rolex market. In this decade, there was a run-up of interest in vintage watches thanks to many factors, but among them certainly was the spread of information via the internet. Websites like this very one (founded in 2008) and Instagram (founded in 2010) were a major factor in driving more people towards watches, vintage watches, and vintage Rolex. As is evident in the data, the market went on a real run, fueled by this newfound interest and continual record-breaking news from the major auction houses. And on this run, the vintage Rolex world identified clear “grails,” specific watches that were seriously coveted, more coveted than all the rest. Think of the Oyster-cased Triple Calendar Moonphase ref. 6062, ref. 5517 Mil-Subs, gold Paul Newmans, and, of course, ref. 6263 and 6265 Panda Newmans.
